Fine Brazilian Hardwood

Scientific Name: Bowdichia Nitida
Brazilian Name: Sucupira

Sucupira, or Brazilian Chestnut, is an exotic hardwood with a spectacular blend of beauty and sensibility. Brazilian Chestnut is a very heavy and durable wood, with a hardness that is 2140 on the Janka Scale. Its heartwood can be rich red-brown, chocolate-brown, or light brown heartwood with yellowish or whitish tones; usually with fine honey-colored parenchyma stripes. The sapwood is golden to cream color and clearly distinctive. Its dark warm tones- mostly unaffected by light exposure- make it immensely appealing; while, its strength allows for applications in high traffic areas and heavy construction.

In addition to such, Brazilian Chestnut is highly impervious to rot and fungi; and moderate to very resistant to termite attacks. Even railroad ties in the Netherlands made of Brazilian Chestnut heartwood showed no signs of decay after 17 years! The texture is medium and coarse, while the grain can be interlocked and irregular. Due to its magnificence and great resilience Brazilian Chestnut is very popular amongst home owners and decorators alike.
